What Canopy does

From “what is this?” to a plant that’s thriving

Canopy covers the whole life of a plant in your home: naming it, finding it the right spot, keeping it watered, and catching trouble before it spreads.

Point your camera, get a name

Take up to three photos and Canopy identifies the plant, common name and scientific name both. When it isn’t sure it shows its best guesses so you can pick, and if you already know the plant you can just type the name.

A care guide written for that plant

How much sun it wants, how to water it (“soak, then let it dry out”), the humidity and temperatures it is comfortable in, when to feed it, the problems it is prone to, and how forgiving it is when you forget.

Put it where it will actually thrive

Describe your rooms, balcony or terrace once: the light, the wind, whether the cat goes there. Every plant then gets a plain verdict for where it stands, from “thrives here” to “won’t survive here”, and a better room if you have one.

Watering reminders you can answer in one tap

Pick a time of day and get one digest (“3 plants need water: Monty, Fern and Basil”) or one reminder per plant. Tap “Mark all watered” right on the notification, or snooze a day when you’re away.

Health checks that remember last time

Yellow leaves? Take a photo. Canopy looks at it alongside your earlier checks and care log and says what it sees, what to do first, whether things are better or worse, and when a repot is due.

Cat safety on every plant

Each plant is rated safe, mild, harmful or dangerous for cats, with what to do if one is eaten. If a risky plant is somewhere the cat can reach, your home screen flags it and suggests a cat-free room to move it to.

How it works

Three steps, then it mostly runs itself

Setup is a few minutes. After that, Canopy tells you when to water and asks for a photo now and then.

1

Describe your rooms

Name the places your plants live, say how much light and wind each one gets, and tick the ones the cat can reach.

2

Scan a plant

Take a few photos, confirm the name, and choose the spot it stands in. The care guide and the fit verdict are ready straight away.

3

Let the reminders remember

Choose a reminder time and get on with your day. Water when your phone says so, and check in with a photo when something looks off.

Check by check

See how each plant is doing over time

A health check isn’t a one-off verdict. Canopy compares the new photo with the last one, counts the waterings and moves in between, and tells you whether the plant is better, about the same, or worse, and the one or two things to do next.

  • A status in plain words: thriving, healthy, needs attention, struggling or critical, always with a glyph and never colour alone
  • When a check says “look again in ten days”, that lands in your reminders alongside the watering
  • Repotting without the guesswork: a potting recipe turned into litres for your pot size, and one shopping list for every plant that is due

FAQ

Questions people ask before they download

Short answers here; the long versions are on the support page and in the Privacy Policy.

Is Canopy free?

Yes. There are no in-app purchases. The AI features have a daily allowance per account (identifications and care guides share one, health checks have another) so the app can stay free; they reset on their own every 24 hours.

Does it work for balcony and garden plants too?

Yes. A location can be indoors, a covered balcony or porch, or an open terrace or garden, with how much sun and wind it gets. The care guide covers wind and rain tolerance and the temperature a plant is damaged below, and a health check will tell you when it’s time to bring one inside.

What if it identifies my plant wrongly?

When Canopy isn’t confident it shows up to three candidates and lets you choose. If none is right, type the plant’s name and the care guide is written from that instead. You can rename a plant or give it a nickname at any time.

How do the reminders work?

They are ordinary notifications scheduled on your phone from your own watering log, two weeks ahead, so they arrive even with no signal. Choose one daily digest or one reminder per plant, and the time of day. You’ll need to allow notifications when the app asks.

Can I trust the cat-safety ratings?

Use them as a strong hint, not a substitute for a vet. Ratings are generated by the AI from the identified species, and when it can’t tell, Canopy treats the plant as unsafe rather than guessing. If your cat has eaten something, call your vet.

What happens to my photos and data?

Photos are resized and stripped of location data before upload, then stored in a private folder only your account can read. The photos you submit for identification and health checks are analysed by OpenAI. There are no analytics or advertising trackers. You can delete your account and everything in it from Settings in the app; details are in the Privacy Policy and on the data deletion page.

Which phones does it run on?

Canopy is built for iPhone and Android phones. The minimum system versions will be listed on the store pages.
